The Workshop - Shop

With five generations of the Viader lineage behind it, the Granja Viader on Carrer Xuclà in Barcelona not only remains active today but also enjoys international recognition with prominent mentions in leading tourist guides and specialized gastronomy publications.

Granja M. Viader of Barcelona

It was also there that Marc Viader i Bas lived from his arrival in Barcelona until the late 1920s, and it served as the base for his businesses.

In a prosperous and emerging era for Catalonia and the industrial, commercial, and bourgeois city that was Barcelona, offering work and opportunities, Marc Viader i Bas arrived around 1895, fleeing an impoverished countryside. It was at Mrs. Coma’s dairy. Coma, on Carrer Xuclà.

By 1904, he had taken over the business as a tenant, and in 1910, he became its owner, registering that dairy under the name Granja M.Viader.

Marc Viader i Bas is not, however, a simple shopkeeper. He believes that the success of the business must lie in the quality of its products and their diversification. He is a born innovator, and contrary to the custom of keeping cows behind the shop, where significant hygiene problems arose, he had milk and eggs brought from the countryside (from his Cardedeu and Begues, among other towns).

This dairy farm on Xuclà street became the center of his activities, the showcase for his products, and his research laboratory. However, he did not carry out this work alone with his wife, and as was the custom of the time, as the children grew up, they integrated into the business and his project, allowing it to grow and diversify, creating up to 7 branches in Barcelona.

His great success came from the production and distribution of native and emblematic Catalan products such as milk, liquid and whipped cream, crema catalana, butter, and others.
